School of Nursing Scholarships

The Student Funding Office offers scholarships, endowments and fellowships, made possible through generous donors, to support students through their academic studies. Please consult the information below on the different opportunities. To apply, complete the 2025-2026 scholarship application form by 5 p.m. PT, April 30, 2025.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR WHICH A GOAL STATEMENT IS A REQUIRED APPLICATION COMPONENT

The following scholarship opportunities require completion of the School of Nursing scholarship application form and the submission of a goal statement. Recipients are selected by the School's Students Awards Committee.

Alex Anagnos Scholarship

Eligibility:

• Currently enrolled Nursing PhD, Post-Master's Entry to DNP and BSN Entry to DNP students may apply
• Full-time student with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2
• Students who exhibit potential for high achievement in the nursing profession
• Expresses a commitment to care for vulnerable and underserved populations upon graduation
• Students who demonstrate a past commitment to serving the needs of vulnerable and underserved populations may apply, PREFERENCE will be given to:
1) men in nursing or those who can best promote the service of men in nursing, 2) students in the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) specialty (if you are not in the PMHNP specialty, please address how you are serving Psych Nursing), and 3) students who demonstrate a sustained and meaningful commitment to improving the quality of care delivery systems for vulnerable and underserved populations;
• There are no citizenship requirements
• Previous awardees may reapply up to two years maximum
• No support can be provided to students on filing fee status

Responsibilities:

Maintain a GPA of at least 3.2, and a full-time registered student status (minimum of 8 units).

Osher Scholarship: Provides various award amounts every year for two academic years to the awardees.

Eligibility
Post-Master's Entry to DNP and BSN Entry to DNP students are eligible.

  • Full-time student with an undergraduate cumulative GPA of at least 3.2
  • Students who meet the School of Nursing’s relative financial need criteria
  • Students who exhibit potential for leadership and high achievement in the nursing profession and a commitment to care for vulnerable and underserved populations upon graduation

Please note that UCSF employees receiving employee fee reduction are not eligible.  


Responsibilities:
Student recipients are expected to undertake some form of community services beyond their clinical activity while enrolled in school. If you are granted an Osher Scholarship, you must:

  • Submit an annual service plan about the volunteer activity to [email protected] in the beginning of a school year.
  • Provide a quarterly report on the service activity to [email protected]
  • Maintain service to the community while enrolled in the Post-Master's Entry to the DNP and BSN Entry to the DNP equal to at least 2 hours per week or 25-30 hours per quarter
  • Maintain a GPA of at least 3.2
  • Maintain full-time registered student status (minimum of 8 units). No support is provided to students on filing fee status.
  • Make an oral report and/or attend an annual Osher Foundation Board of Directors Reception

Sociology PhD students have unique scholarship opportunities to support dissertations. Please visit the Sociology Scholarships and Fellowships webpage.

Up to $1,000, once per student Dissertation candidacy for those in PhD Nursing program

  • Overview of expected expenses
  • Shandel Roberts in the Student Funding Office confirms receipt of full application materials and confirms candidacy
  • All materials are sent to the PhD Nursing program director for approval.
  • After approval, the Student Funding Office processes the funds as one full stipend payment.

DNP Project Support Award Up to $1,000, once per student Must be enrolled in at least one project series course at the time of application

ADDITIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS, ENDOWMENTS AND GIFTS

The following scholarships, endowments or gift opportunities are available to School of Nursing students. Endowments are funds provided by UCSF's generous donors, and may have specific criteria for awarding. Please note that a selected number of the opportunities below require a separate application. A FAFSA is not required for all SON applications. However, the FAFSA is helpful in determining financial need for several types of aid. Learn more about the FAFSA process.

To apply, please complete the School of Nursing 2025-2026 scholarship application form and submit it with your CV to the Student Funding Office. The deadline is April 30, 2025, 5 p.m. (Pacific Time). Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Please be sure to list all your nursing experience on your CV. The Student Funding Office uses the CV, in combination with your application, to match eligible students with endowments.

Allen Endowed Scholarship: To provide financial support to doctoral students in the SON whose research and/or clinical practice is directly related to heart failure and its assoc. consequences. Doctoral students in the PhD program will be given preferential consideration. In the absence of qualified PhD students, the DNP students who care for people with heart failure and whose DNP scholarly projects propose to improve their care may be suitable recipients. Wolfe End Scholarship: To provide one scholarship per year to a student at UCSF SON with a career goal of serving the needs of Children. Chose a nursing student each year who: (a) shows exceptional academic promise; (b) demonstrates dedication and sincere desire to help serve the needs and improve the lives of children and pursue a career in children's heath; and (c) expresses an interest in working in San Francisco after graduation. The same nursing student may receive a scholarship for multiple years. Alumni Memorial Scholarship: The Alumni Memorial Association Scholarship is an award made based on academic merit, promise, and current and future professional contributions. All enrolled UCSF School of Nursing students, including Post-Master's Entry to DNP, PhD and BSN Entry to DNP students who are currently enrolled full time and have at least one or more years to complete their degree program and are in good standing with a minimum accumulative GPA of 3.0 may apply. Chao Endowed Scholarship Global Health: To provide scholarships to graduate nursing students with preference given to international students from developing countries who intend to return to their countries of origin upon completion of their program. Resik Nursing Scholarship: To be awarded to students with a preference for students specializing in Occupational and Environmental Health Nursing or Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nursing. Gilliss Educational Award: To provide scholarships to registered nurses employed at UCSF Health who wish to pursue a PhD or DNP degree at the UCSF SON. PhD Nursing, Post-Master's Entry to DNP April 30, 2025, 5 p.m. PT
S. Valeriote Goldman Endowed Scholarship: To provide scholarship support to students in the DNP program who have demonstrated financial need and who have a record of academic success.  Post-Master's Entry to DNP April 30, 2025, 5 p.m. PT
Gloria Braje Memorial Endowed Scholarship: Must be awarded to at least one student enrolled at UCSF SON every academic year. Preference for students enrolled in the DNP who have demonstrated financial need and who have a geriatrics concentration. Post-Master's Entry to DNP April 30, 2025, 5 p.m. PT
Gene Jack Donnell: To support an annual, one-year scholarship to a student in the DNP program who has demonstrated greater-than-average financial need. PhD Nursing, Post-Master's Entry to DNP April 30, 2025, 5 p.m. PT
Shulman: To support scholarships for students in the DNP at the UCSF SON. A student who shows exceptional promise and who is in need. Post-Master's Entry to DNP April 30, 2025, 5 p.m. PT
Sharon Burke Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to nursing students who are women and/or women with prior convictions involving the justice system. PhD Nursing, Post-Master's Entry to DNP April 30, 2025, 5 p.m. PT
Tobias: For students that will be training in either cardiology or cardiovascular fields, or training in the radiation oncology technology department. PhD Nursing, Post-Master's Entry to DNP and BSN Entry to DNP April 30, 2025, 5 p.m. PT
Tempkin: To be awarded to one or more needy students who have exhibited outstanding promise. Post-Master's Entry to DNP April 30, 2025, 5 p.m. PT

 

TRAVEL AWARDS

  • The Associated Students of the School of Nursing (ASSN): ASSN supports students attending or presenting at conferences. To request support, please submit the conference reimbursement request within 30 days of conference attendance, along with all receipts and supporting documentation. ASSN can fund up to $200 per student for reimbursement of conference attendance fees, including entrance fees, travel fees and meals. The ASSN treasurer will provide a response to submitted forms within two weeks. To apply, visit the ASSN webpage.
  • Sponsored Event/Project Funding from the ASSN can be granted to students who organize a special conference, presentation or project that enhances the student learning experience at UCSF. Requests are reviewed and voted on by ASSN board members with notification of the decision by email afterward. Any granted funding will be reimbursed only AFTER the event and after receipts have been submitted. You can submit your request through this form.  
  • The UCSF Graduate Division provides up to $700 in travel awards for graduate academic students to present their work at professional conferences. Award funding is dependent on funds availability. Students should seek support from research advisers, principal investigators, graduate programs and schools before applying for the Graduate Division's travel awards. Funds may be used for transportation and registration costs only, and students must be presenting at the conference. Students may receive only one travel award as a degree candidate.   • Basic Needs: The ASSN offers up to $100 per student per quarter to assist with basic needs such as gas, utilities, groceries, etc. The distribution will be on a first-come, first-served basis while funds are available. To request basic needs support, please complete this form.
