The UCSF School of Nursing was well represented at the recent National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) 44th Annual Conference. NONPF is a national/international organization that promotes nurse practitioner (NP) education and drives policy decisions and competency development. The theme of this year's conference, held April 18 to 22 in Indianapolis, was “Steering NP Education Toward the Future,” and it provided multiple informative and innovative examples of NP educational practices.

UCSF Faculty presented and participated in multiple lectures and symposia, including:

  • "Steering students to autonomy: Self-directed learning in clinical education" (Elizabeth Gatewood, RN, MS, NP)
  • "I'd like to tell you what I need: Utilizing adolescent standardized patients from diverse backgrounds" (Linda Stephan, RN, MSN, PNP, Jayme Mejia, RN, MSN, FNP, Naomi Schapiro, RN, PhD, PNP)
  • "Building capacity and connections of inter-professional preceptors in HPSA settings through academic clinical partnerships" (Angel Chen, RN, MSN, PNP, Elizabeth Gatewood, RN, MS, NP)
  • "Social determinants of health and obesity: Reflections from an inter-professional service learning experience" (Victoria Keeton, RN, MS, PNP, Linda Stephan, RN, MSN, PNP, Shawna Sisler, RN, MSN, PNP, Naomi Schapiro, RN, PhD, PNP)
  • "Thinking outside the box: Are we ready for tele-precepting to expand training and practice venues?" (Deborah Johnson, DNP, MS, RN, PMHNP-BC)
  • "Observed simulated clinical exam in the Family Nurse Practitioner program" (Michalle Ramirez-McLaughlin, RN, MS, NP, Andrea Kuster, MSN, RN, FNP, Elizabeth Gatewood, RN, MS, NP)

The conference also provided an opportunity for ongoing work related to the NONPF Simulation Special Interest Group (SIG), formed two years ago by Professors Annette Carley, RN, DNP, NP, and JoAnne Saxe, RN, DNP, ANP-BC, FAAN, with a colleague from USF and currently chaired by Annette Carley. The SIG has been working to integrate universal definitions of simulation in nursing, map types of simulation and develop scalable simulation-based activities. The work from this SIG led directly to the development of a multi-site presentation showcase, "The Use of OSCE in Nurse Practitioner Education," presented at the meeting that included representation from UCSF, USF, University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center, University of Alabama Birmingham and University of Arizona.
