The Leadership Education in Adolescent Health (LEAH) program is a national interprofessional training opportunity with the major objective of developing leadership expertise among a range of professional disciplines in the area of adolescent health. The core disciplines of the faculty and trainees include medicine, nutrition, nursing, social welfare and psychology.
The UCSF LEAH Nurse Practitioner Traineeship runs concurrently with master’s level advanced practice nursing education and (ideally) includes the summer quarter between the first and second years. Professor Lisa Mihaly will assist the trainee in developing and meeting their individualized learning goals.
Components of the LEAH NP traineeship can include:
- Priority for participation in adolescent-focused clinical opportunities appropriate for clinical specialty
- Completion of an adolescent-focused project (this can be concurrent with project planning and / or comprehensive exam)
- Participation (when possible) in UCSF School of Medicine Division of Adolescent Medicine activities including patient management rounds, division retreats, research seminars, QI seminars and others
- Fully supported attendance at the national conference of the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine (including registration fees and travel expenses)
Stipends are available for participants. Amounts will vary depending on grant funding – likely approximately $1000 per student.
Process for Applying to the Concentration
Students interested in the LEAH program should contact Lisa Mihaly, faculty in the FNP specialty who also serves as nurse practitioner faculty in the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine. Applications are accepted during the winter quarter of the first year for master’s students (second year for three-year students).
The application deadline is Feb. 29, 2024.
The application process includes:
- An orientation meeting for all interested master’s students (recorded)
- Completion of a brief survey to gather information about your adolescent health experience and interest A current resume/curriculum vitae
- A brief note from your faculty advisor confirming that you are a student in good academic standing and that it is appropriate for you to take on additional commitments
- An interview with Lisa Mihaly, nurse faculty of the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine to be scheduled after application is submitted and reviewed
LEAH Components
- Completion of the interdisciplinary Adolescent Core Seminar (Peds180 B and C - 2 quarters) ideally prior to beginning the traineeship (Exceptions will be made for students with conflicting program requirements.)
- Summer quarter registration for didactic and clinical work focused on adolescent health (can be deferred)
- Satisfactory completion of all clinical obligations
- Satisfactory completion and presentation of an approved project focused on adolescent or young adult health (students can use Project Planning project and/or comprehensive exam topic)
- Completion of the “resident lecture” series during the summer and/or final academic year
- Attendance and participation in Division of Adolescent Medicine activities during the summer and final academic year.
- Submission of trainee logs of all activities to faculty prior to completing traineeship
