School, ZSFG and Highland Hospital to Collaborate on “RN Special Programs”

Following a successful presentation to the commission of the Song-Brown CA Health Workforce of the School’s Certified Nurse-Midwife/Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (CNM/WHNP) program and "RN Special Programs" application, the proposal received full funding—$125,000 over two years.

The CNM/WHNP "RN Special Programs" proposal was written in conjunction with nurse-midwifery community partners at ZSFG and Highland Hospital; it will focus on improving the School’s culture of inclusion in the classroom and in the clinical settings, as well as developing our students’ advocacy and leadership skills in working with vulnerable populations.

In partnership with ZSFG and Highland Hospitals, nurse-midwives that specialize in providing care to marginalized and vulnerable populations, the “RN Special Programs” collaboration will:

  • Revise the CNM/WHNP Health Disparities curriculum.
  • Develop and implement preceptor training in culturally responsive clinical education, especially when working across racial identities with under-represented minority students.

This funding will also support Incorporation of CNM/WHNP students into the ZSFG Training and Education Programs for Underserved Populations (STEP UP) program, furthering its interprofessional endeavor to address advocacy and leadership. Currently, the program is currently geared toward medical residents that serve patients at ZSFG.
