Transgender and Gender-Nonconforming (TGNC) Care 101 for Nursing Preceptors

The training module content will include a beginner’s level overview of transgender and gender-nonconforming (TGNC) content for clinicians and preceptors, including an overview of gender identity terminology, mental and physical health disparities, common barriers to health and healthcare, and professional standards of care. The module will also provide an overview of the roles of healthcare providers in providing gender-affirming care, the role of clinical preceptors in modeling gender-affirming practices for students, and steps to creating a gender-affirming health care environment.

Components:

  1. Pre-test
  2. 50-minute pre-recorded online training module (by Sept. 30)
  3. 1-hour Zoom expert-led Question & Answer session (optional)
  4. Post-test

Incentives:

1-hour Continuing Education Unit (CEU) for first 50 participants upon completion of post-test. CEUs are available until Sept. 30

At the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Define common gender identity terms
  • Locate professional standards and practice guidelines for Gender-Affirming Care
  • Identify common health and health care access disparities impacting TGNC population
  • Identify roles of Nurse Practitioners in providing Gender-Affirming Care
  • Identify roles of Clinical Preceptors in modeling Gender-Affirming Care to students
  • Describe techniques for creating a Gender-Affirming Care Environment
  • Identify opportunities for further learning

During this training, participants will:

  • Participate in an anonymous assessment of knowledge and beliefs regarding caring for transgender and gender non-conforming patients
  • Discuss new knowledge in an optional Zoom expert-led Question & Answer session

  • A computer with a video camera to participate in a Zoom format
