UCSF Professor Emerita Afaf Meleis Honored with Prestigious Award from Thailand Ministry of Public Health

Afaf I. Meleis, PhD, DrPS(hon), FAAN, LL, Professor of Nursing and Sociology and Dean Emerita, has been awarded The Princess Srinagarindra Award by the Thailand Ministry of Public Health. One of the most prestigious awards in Thailand, it was established in commemoration of the Centenary Birthday Anniversary of Her Royal Highness Princess Sringarindra Mahidol to recognize her exemplary contributions to the advancement of nursing, midwifery and social services.

Meleis has dedicated her life to working to advance nursing education, science, practice and leadership. She was a professor at UCSF for 34 years, during which she published the book “Theoretical Nursing: Development and Progress” that is used in graduate curriculums internationally.

Throughout her career and in many locales around the world including in Thailand, she has been a force for change in the development of high-quality doctoral education that is based on the very best nursing science. She has organized international collaborations and conferences and served as a consultant globally with the goal to foster the creation and dissemination of knowledge on women’s work, health, and transitions, with a particular focus on women in developing countries and immigrant women.
