Appointment Of Carol Dawson-Rose To Livingston Chair

Carol Dawson Rose

Community Health Systems Chair Carol Dawson-Rose, PhD, RN, FAAN, has been appointed to the James P. and Marjorie A. Livingston Chair in Nursing Excellence.

Dawson-Rose’s passion for advancing the care of patients in hospitals, and her focus on vulnerable and underrepresented communities embodies the goals of this esteemed chair.

The Livingston Chair was made possible by a gift from the late Jim Livingston and his wife Marjorie, a registered nurse. Jim was one of the earliest philanthropic supporters of our school. During his career, which involved the sale of medical gases to hospitals, Jim came to understand the essential relationship between nurses and hospitalized patients. As part of their commitment to Jim and Marjorie, previous chair holders regularly visited hospitals in the Central Valley, where Jim and Marjorie lived, to offer consultation and continuing education.

Earlier in her career, Dawson-Rose was a nurse on the front lines of the HIV and AIDS crisis from its beginning. She has been a leader on the executive councils of the AIDS Research Institute and the Center for AIDS Research. More recently, her work has focused on identifying, reducing and preventing use of alcohol and illicit drugs. She is acutely aware that nursing’s role in clinical care is to go beyond medical diagnoses, to know each patient as an individual and understand the broader context of that person’s life.

She succeeds Audrey Lyndon, PhD, RN, FAAN, who left UCSF last year to accept a position at NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing. A reception in Dawson-Rose's honor will be scheduled in the coming months.
