Meet 25 UCSF nursing faculty and alumni who have made a remarkable difference during this pandemic through their commitment, innovation and leadership.

For many nurses, the COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced and sharpened their commitment to health care and our communities. We asked a few alumni, students and faculty to share their experiences. These are their stories.

KT Waxman, DNP, RN, FAAN, a distinguished nurse leader in hospitals and academic institutions, will join the UCSF School of Nursing starting Dec. 1, 2021 as director of its Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program.

Jennifer James, assistant professor in the Institute for Health & Aging, is one of three scholars nationwide to be named to the Greenwall Faculty Scholars Program in Bioethics’ Class of 2024.

Christine Miaskowski, professor in Physiological Nursing, has been recognized as one of the “champions and changemakers of cancer prevention, early detection and symptom science” by the Division of Cancer Prevention.

Sandy Staveski, assistant professor in Family Health Care Nursing, has been elected to the board of the World Federation of Pediatric Intensive and Critical Care Society.

Christine Miaskowski, professor in Physiological Nursing, has been awarded the 2020 Ada Sue Hinshaw Award from the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research (FNINR). The School will host a recognition celebration in early 2021.

Three UCSF School of Nursing faculty members are continuing a tradition of faculty leaders who are steering impactful change on the national and international stage. As presidents of major professional nursing organizations, these faculty members are leading important initiatives — from influencing policy, to increasing diversity, to enhancing access to care — that will advance expand health care access for patients nationwide and across the globe.

Meet 40 rising nursing leaders from the UCSF School of Nursing who are leading innovative changes and forging new paths to better health for our communities. These faculty, students and alumni, who are age 40 or younger, are already making significant contributions in health care. With the start of a new year and a new decade comes the promise of innovative advancements in health and health care. Here, seven faculty at the UCSF School of Nursing lay out their visions for what they are looking forward to in the 2020s — and the steps needed to advance human health and health care in our communities and beyond.

UCSF School of Nursing sociologist Howard Pinderhughes is leading an initiative to make UCSF an "anchor institution." The designation could help UCSF further improve health equity for underserved members of our community.
