Christine Miaskowski Christine Miaskowski Honored for Shaping Cancer Prevention Research

Christine Miaskowski, professor in Physiological Nursing, has been recognized as one of the “champions and changemakers of cancer prevention, early detection and symptom science” by the Division of Cancer Prevention as part of its commemoration of the passage of the National Cancer Act, which was signed into law 50 years ago.

Miaskowski has devoted four decades to researching pain control and symptom management. Her work has revolutionized the collective understanding of inter-individual variability in patients’ experiences.

Elena Flowers Joins Board of California’s Stem Cell Agency

Elena Flowers, associate professor in Physiological Nursing, has been selected to join the board of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), the state’s stem cell agency. Elena Flowers She was appointed by state Controller Betty T. Yee. 

“I am honored to have the opportunity to serve the citizens of California in this capacity,” Flowers said. “CIRM has ambitious goals, seeking to improve upon common limitations of public research agencies by its commitment to delivering meaningful findings and ultimately treatments for patients as rapidly as possible. I’m particularly committed to improving inclusion and access to these treatments across the entire diverse California population.”

Ifeyinwa Asiodu Honored With Golden Wave Award

Ifeyinwa Asiodu

Ifeyinwa Asiodu, assistant professor in Family Health Care Nursing, is the 2021 recipient of the Golden Wave Award from the California Breastfeeding Coalition. The award, which was presented at this year’s California Breastfeeding Summit, is bestowed on an individual(s) for their meaningful contributions to create “everlasting waves of change” to remove barriers to breastfeeding (including chestfeeding and human milk feedings) in California.

Kristen Harknett, Soo-Jeong Lee Present Research Findings

Two SON faculty presented their research findings before an audience of federal government staff and researchers at a U.S. Department of Labor event on Feb. 4 that Kristen Harknett, Soo-Jeong Lee highlighted Labor Research and Evaluation Grant projects.

Kristen Harknett, associate professor in Social and Behavioral Sciences, presented on “Regulating Unstable and Unpredictable Work Hours in the Service Sector: Evidence from Seattle.”

Soo-Jeong Lee, associate professor in Community Health Systems, gave the presentation, “The Impact of Safe Patient Handling Legislation on Musculoskeletal Disorders among California Health Care Workers.”

Elizabeth Gatewood Named 2021 FAANP

Elizabeth Gatewood

Assistant Dean of Education and Technology Elizabeth Gatewood has been named a 20212 Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. The purpose of the Fellows is to impact national and global health by engaging recognized nurse practitioners to lead new initiatives and support the AANP mission.

Julene Johnson Awarded for Excellence in Mentoring

Julene Johnson, associate dean for research and professor in the Institute for Health & Aging, is the recipient of the 2021 UCSF Distinction in Mentoring Award in the FullJulene Johnson Professor category.

These awards are conferred by the UCSF Academic Senate and the Committee on Academic Personnel to recognize exceptional mentoring by faculty to faculty, and faculty to clinical and/or postdocs. Award recipients will be celebrated at a virtual awards ceremony slated for this spring.

Andrew Penn Honored for Teaching Excellence

Andrew Penn, associate professor in Community Health Systems, is the recipient of the 2021 UCSF Distinction in Teaching Award.

Rosalind De Lisser, Eric Manbossia Receive Best Workshop Award

Rosalind De Lisser and Eric Manbossia Rosalind De Lisser, MS, FNP, PMHNP, associate professor in Community Health Systems, and alumnus Eric Manbossia, MS, PMHNP, received the 2020 Best Workshop Award from the Association for Multidisciplinary Education and Research in Substance use and Addiction (AMERSA). The pair had facilitated the workshop, “Structural Competency and Minority Addiction Care: A Skill Building Workshop to Develop a Community Collaborative-Based Intervention,” at AMERSA's 2020 conference.
