Ifeyinwa Asiodu Recognized with Changemaker Award

Ifeyinwa Asiodu, PhD, RN, FAAN, associate professor, received a Changemaker Award from the United States Lactation Consultant Association. The prestigious award recognizes Asiodu's work to advance the promotion of human milk feeding.

Alumna Honored by UC President, Regents

Kuanie Julin, MS '24, alumna of the adult gerontology acute care nurse practitioner specialty, received the UC Regents Foster Youth Award in recognition of her involvement in the UCSF Guardian Scholars Program, which supports UCSF former foster youth pursuing graduate and professional degrees. As a student ambassador, Julin helped launch the program in 2023, and she remains involved today, mentoring first-generation students and welcoming new Guardian Scholars to UCSF. 

Faculty Receives Clinical Excellence Award

Chelsea Landolin, MS, PMHNP, ANP, associate professor, and Anna Strewler, MS, AGPCNP, assistant professor, received the Clinical Excellence Award from the UCSF Academic Senate. The award honors individuals who have demonstrated excellence in clinical care and have a commitment to innovation within the clinical realm

Coretta Jenerette Honored for Compassionate Leadership

Coretta Jenerette, PhD, RN, FAAN, professor, was honored with the DAISY Nurse Leader Award at the 2024 South Carolina Nurses Association Convention. The award recognizes those who provide compassionate leadership and help create a caring environment. Jenerette was nominated by colleagues of the Midlands of South Carolina Black Nurses Association, where she is a founding member and current president.

CARE Registry Recognized by the California State Assembly

This fall, the California State Assembly presented a certificate of recognition to the Collaborative Approach for Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders Research and Education (CARE) Registry in recognition of its outstanding contributions to advancing the health and wellness of the Filipino American community. Since 2020, Van Park, PhD, MPH, professor, and her CARE Registry team have recruited more than 10,000 Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) participants into the CARE registry — a research registry that seeks to advance the meaningful inclusion of AANHPI communities in health studies and reduce AANHPI health disparities.

Faculty Share Expertise at National, International Events

  • Susan Chapman, PhD, RN, FAAN, professor, visited Spain's University of Barcelona School of Nursing (UBSON) on Nov. 11 to give a lecture on the advanced practice nursing profession globally and in the United States.
     
  • Elizabeth Gatewood, DNP, FNP, FAAN, professor and assistant dean of educational technology innovation, and Angel Kuo, EdD, PNP, professor, presented at the California Primary Care Association 2025 Workforce Symposium, Jan. 29-30, in Sacramento. Their presentation was titled "Preparing Nurse Practitioners for a Sustainable Career in Primary Care at a Federally Qualified Health Center Through a Residency Program."
     
  • Soo-Jeong Lee, PhD, RN, FAAOHN, professor, was the plenary speaker at the Korean Association of Occupational Health Nurses and the Korean Academic Society of Occupational Health Nursing conference, Nov. 15-16, in Gyeongju, South Korea. Lee's presentation was titled "Career Development in Occupational Health Nursing."
     
  • Tracy Lin, PhD, MSc, associate professor, presented at the UCSF PRISE Center Implementation Sciences Seminar Series on Dec. 9. Her presentation, entitled "Economic Evaluations in Global Health," featured a framework for economic evaluations and a discussion of how varying methodologies may be used to inform evidence-based decision-making in health system resource allocation.
     
  • Jenny Liu, PhD, MPP, professor, presented to UCSF's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences on Jan. 10. The title of the talk was "Invisible Work and the Minority Tax in Academia."
     
  • Van Park, PhD, MPH, professor, delivered a presentation during an event hosted by Being Patient on Dec. 17. Park discussed her work with the Asian Cohort for Alzheimer's Disease project, barriers to dementia care and education for Asian American communities, and other projects she is leading to improve brain health equity in marginalized communities.
     
  • Andrew Penn, MS, RN, PMHNP, professor, presented at the University of Madison School of Pharmacy Symposia on Psychedelics, Nov. 7-8. His presentation was titled "What Happens in the Room During Psychedelic Therapy? When Nursing Caring Science Meets Psychedelic Treatment."
     
  • Glenn-Milo Santos, PhD, MPH, professor, was a plenary speaker and panelist at the International AIDS Society's HIV Research for Prevention Conference, Oct. 6-10, in Lima, Peru. His presentation, part of the "Navigating ARV-Based Prevention Choices and Achieving Implementation Advances for Key Populations" session, addressed PrEP among people who use drugs. Santos was also a panelist alongside Francisco Ruiz, MS, former director of the White House Office of National AIDS/HIV Policy.
     
  • Stacy Torres, PhD, assistant professor, presented her new book "At Home in the City: Growing Old in Urban America," at a Feb. 5 event hosted by the UC Berkeley Center for Ethnographic Research. She also hared her expertise as a panelist at "Elderspeak: Ageism in Healthcare," part of the Stanford Center on Longevity's Century Summit 2025, Jan. 22-23.
     
  • Sandra Weiss, PhD, RN, FAAN, professor, delivered a presentation during the XVII International Congress on Maternal Health and Obstetric Nursing in Portugal in November. Her presentation was titled "Intergenerational Transmission of Depression and Mood Disorders in Pregnancy — the Importance of the Microbiome."
     
  • Jarmin Yeh, PhD, MPH, MSSW, associate professor, delivered a presentation during the Rutgers Hub for Aging Collaboration's virtual summit on Dec. 5. Yeh's presentation was "Co-Creating an LGBTQ+ Adult Day Program: Lessons Learned from a Formative Evaluation."

Celebrating Preceptors

Shawna Ward, MSN, APRN, CPNP-AC, is the school's February Preceptor of the Month. Ward is a pediatric critical care nurse practitioner at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

“I enjoy teaching and supporting the next generation of nurses and nurse practitioners, Ward says. “My hope is that I can have a positive impact on their lives and their careers moving forward.” Preceptee Alice Johnson shares, “Shawna was the first ever NP to work in the Oakland PICU and she quickly demonstrated to the PICU attendings how valuable an NP can be on the team."

Jessica Axelrod, January Preceptor

A SON alumna, Jessica Axelrod, MS '06, RN, PNP, is the school's January preceptor of the month. She has been a primary care pediatric nurse practitioner at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital's Children’s Health Center for 18 years. She is also a longtime preceptor of SON students. “Jessica has contributed significantly to our students' understanding of how to provide evidence-based, compassionate pediatric primary care,” says Mary Anne Israel, MS, RN, PNP, assistant professor and specialty coordinator for the pediatric nurse practitioner specialty. “We are grateful our students have the opportunity to learn from Jessica's expertise.”

“I love precepting students because it gives me an opportunity to teach and learn,” says Axelrod. “It is also a way for me to pay forward the great experiences I had with my own SON preceptors!”

Samuel Tucker, December Preceptor

Samuel Tucker, MD, MPH, is the school's December Preceptor of the Month. Tucker is a psychiatrist with over 44 years of experience in the field of medicine and has spent many years working with Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner specialty students.

"[He] generously shares not only his extensive professional experience in psychiatry, but also his passion for helping patients who are marginalized and often underserved," shares a student who was precepted by Tucker. "He ensures we recognize the role of holistic assessment and treatment with respect to both pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatment, helping us become competent and confident providers."

Faculty, Staff Capture New Funding

  • Sara Ackerman, PhD, MPH, associate professor, and Lauren Suchman, PhD, assistant professor, have each been awarded an IMPACT Last Mile grant supplement from UCSF's Clinical & Translational Science Institute.These $4,000 awards support the dissemination of completed research to policymakers in governmental and non-governmental sectors. Ackerman's award will support the dissemination of findings from her "Culture of Academic Travel" project which she completed with colleague Katherine Gundling, professor in the School of Medicine. Suchman's award will support the dissemination of findings from two young women-led studies in Kisumu, Kenya.
     
  • Abbey Alkon, PhD, RN, professor, received a grant from the NIH National Institute of Environmental Health Science for her project "Best Practices to Return Results About Pesticide Exposure in Family Child Care Homes." The award is $274,377.
     
  • Jose Gutierrez, PhD, FNP-BC, AAHIVS, assistant professor, received a grant from Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Inc. for his project "Tailoring Delivery of Long-Acting PrEP for Cisgender (MSM) Who Use Methamphetamine." The award is $8,189.
     
  • Kristen Kirksey, PhD, MPH, project policy analyst, received a 2024 Changemakers in Family Planning award from the Society of Family Planning. The honor includes $84,000 to support Kirksey in leading applied research on integrative approaches to reproductive health, developing and evaluating interventions, and disseminating findings to effectively integrate into policy and practice.
     
  • Cherry Leung, PhD, RN, associate professor, received a R61 grant from the NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health for her project "Probiotic Administration for Adolescent Depression." The award is $64,008.
     
  • Glenn-Milo Santos, PhD, MPH, professor, received an award from Heluna Health for his project "PrEP Intervention for People who Inject MEthamphetamine (PRIME)." The award is $25,490. Additionally, Santos received a $12,463 award from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas for his project "Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial of Injectable Naltrexone and Monthly Injectable Buprenorphine for Cocaine Use Disorder (CURB2)."
     
  • Laura Wagner, PhD, RN, FAAN, professor, received an award from the Gilead Foundation to support the FirstGenRN: Health Care Education, Access and Leadership (HEAL) program. The award is $225,000.
