Melinda Bender Selected as Philippine Nurses Association of America 2018 Nurse Researcher of the Year
Melinda Bender Assistant Professor of Family Health Care Nursing Melinda Bender has been named the Philippine Nurses Association of America (PNAA) 2018 Nurse Researcher of the Year. Bender received the award at the PNAA Annual National Convention in Jersey City, New Jersey, on July 28, 2018.
Bender’s area of research is implementation science and dissemination, translating evidence-based lifestyle interventions to real-world settings in an effort to improve health equity and reduce health disparities in high-risk, under-represented populations. Her current focus is on Filipinos, the third-largest Asian American population, who are disproportionately affected by obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiometabolic disease.
Matt Tierney Becomes Office of Population Health Clinical Director
Matt Tierney Matt Tierney, health sciences associate clinical professor in the Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) specialty, joined the UCSF Office of Population Health and Accountable Care (OPHAC) on October 1, 2018, as the clinical director of Substance Use Treatment and Education.
Elena Flowers Gets R21 Award to Study Etiology of Type 2 Diabetes
Elena Flowers Assistant Professor of Physiological Nursing Elena Flowers has received an R21 award from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), an institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), for a study that will provide new insights into the etiology of type 2 diabetes, which is a priority for public health. Flowers’ study proposes to evaluate the complex etiology of type 2 diabetes through a precision health approach, which is aligned with the mission of the NIH.
NIH Posts Webcast of Annesa Flentje Presentation on Health Disparities Among SGM Individuals
Annesa Flentje The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has posted a webcast of a presentation by Assistant Professor of Community Health Systems Annesa Flentje on her work reducing health disparities among sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals. Flentje gave the presentation at a September 18 ceremony, at which she was awarded one of two inaugural Sexual and Gender Minority Research Investigator Awards from the NIH.
Glenn-Milo Santos Gets Grant to Study Binge-Drinking Supplement
Glenn-Milo Santos Glenn-Milo Santos, assistant professor in residence in the Department of Community Health Systems, was awarded a $2.7 million R01 grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). The study, “The A-HACK Project: Addressing Heavy Alcohol Consumption with Kudzu,” is a five-year investigation that will test the efficacy of an herbal supplement, kudzu, in reducing heavy episodic alcohol consumption (i.e., binge drinking) and alcohol-associated sexual risk behaviors among sexually active adults at high risk for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
Andrew Penn Authors Book Chapter on Psychotherapy for PTSD
Andrew Penn Andrew Penn, associate clinical professor of Community Health Systems, is first author of a chapter in a new book, Positive Psychiatry: A Casebook, published by American Psychiatric Association Publishing. The chapter is titled “MDMA-Assisted Psychotherapy for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.”
Shannon Smith-Bernardin Named CHCF Health Care Leadership Program Fellow
Shannon Smith-Bernardin Shannon Smith-Bernardin, a 2016 graduate of the Nursing Health Policy PhD degree program, has been named one of 32 California Health Care Foundation (CHCF) Health Care Leadership Program Fellows for 2018-2020.
The California Health Care Foundation is dedicated to advancing meaningful, measurable improvements in the way the health care delivery system provides care to the people of California, particularly those with low incomes and those whose needs are not well served by the status quo.
The leadership program is a part-time fellowship that offers clinically trained health care professionals hands-on opportunities to develop the decision-making, strategic planning and executive skills they need to excel as multifaceted leaders.
During the two-year program, fellows attend six multiday seminars and participate in ongoing learning activities. Graduates gain insights into the trends and challenges facing health care and leave prepared for new levels of leadership within their organizations.
Measure to Allow Family into ICUs Advances to Puerto Rico Senate
Milagros Figueroa-Ramos and Carmen Mabel Arroyo-Novoa Legislation championed by School of Nursing alumnae Milagros Figueroa-Ramos and Carmen Mabel Arroyo-Novoa that would allow families to be present with their loved ones in adult, pediatric and neonatal intensive care units (ICUs) in Puerto Rico has passed the House of Representatives of Puerto Rico and will now advance to the Senate of Puerto Rico.
Current policy in most Puerto Rico hospitals restricts family visitation in ICUs to a half or full hour twice per day. Figueroa-Ramos and Arroyo-Novoa worked with other clinicians supported by the Puerto Rico Society of Critical, Intensive, and Coronary Care Medicine to pass the legislation in the House of Representatives of Puerto Rico.
Stanford Awards First Postdoctoral Fellowship in Nursing Research to Nancy Dudley
Nancy Dudley Nancy Dudley, a graduate of the Nursing Health Policy PhD degree program, has been awarded Stanford University’s first postdoctoral fellowship in nursing science.
Dudley, whose research has focused on community-based palliative care and improving advanced chronic illness management for older adults across health care settings, was a 2014-2016 National Hartford Centers of Gerontological Nursing Excellence Patricia G. Archbold Scholar and a researcher at UCSF’s Healthforce Center.
At Stanford, Dudley’s postdoctoral work will focus on palliative care in ambulatory settings at Stanford Health Care, Stanford Children’s Health and Stanford School of Medicine.
