Jennifer James Awarded Greenwall Fellowship

Jennifer James Jennifer James, assistant professor in the Institute for Health & Aging, is one of three scholars nationwide to be named to the Greenwall Faculty Scholars Program in Bioethics’ Class of 2024.

The program supports early-stage faculty members conducting innovative bioethics research addressing ethical, policy and practice issues. James will receive 50 percent salary support for three years to advance her bioethics career.

Article by Andrew Penn Is First in AJN Since 1964

Andrew Penn, associate professor in Community Health Systems, co-authored an article on therapeutic psychedelics that is the first to publish in the American Journal of Nursing in more than five decades. Penn’s article, “Psychedelic Assisted Therapy: Emerging Treatments in Mental Health Disorders,” is featured on the journal’s cover. The journal also included a podcast interview with Penn about the article.

Previously, the last article on this topic was Kay Parley’s “Supporting the Patient on LSD Day” in 1964.

Van Park Named Scholar at Alzheimer’s Research Center

Van Park, associate professor in Community Health Systems, has been selected as a scholar for the UCSF Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center’s Research Education Component Program in recognition of the value of her work involving Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

These scholars often have opportunities to present to other UCSF researchers interested in dementia and at national ADRC meetings. Scholars receive $4,000 grants for their research.

Orlando Harris Guest Edits JANAC Special Issue on Racism, Discrimination and Health Inequities

Orlando Harris, assistant professor in Community Health Systems, was one of four guest editors for the Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care’s special issue on Racism, Discrimination, and Health Inequities Associated with HIV and Sexual and Gender Diversity. In addition, Harris co-authored the editorial titled “ ‘The More Things Change, the More Things Remain the Same’: It's Time to Dismantle Structural Inequalities of Racism, Discrimination, and Health Disparities.”

The special issue includes the article “A Review of Nursing Position Statements on Racism Following the Murder of George Floyd and Other Black Americans.” The statement issued by SON was included in the analysis.

Marking 40 Years of AIDS

Carol Dawson-Rose, professor in Community Health Systems, and Cliff Morrison, were featured in UCSF’s remembrance of the first reported cases of what would eventually become known as AIDS 40 years ago.

As part of the campus’s package of submitted pieces this month, Dawson-Rose, who is president of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care, and Morrison, who helped open the nation's first dedicated inpatient AIDS unit, each penned a column in which they shared their experiences and reflected on lessons learned. Morrison was also a guest speaker in the June 4 campus town hall marking 40 years of AIDS.

Monica McLemore Featured at National Academies Workshop

Monica McLemore, associate professor in Family Health Care Nursing, was a featured speaker at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) virtual workshop “Advancing Maternal Health Equity and Reducing Maternal Mortality” from June 7-8.

The workshop examined the state of maternal health in the U.S. and explore the factors needed to enable communities and health care systems to be more effective in reducing maternal morbidity and mortality and improving outcomes for pregnant people. View McLemore’s presentation here.

Kristen Harknett on COVID-19 Impacts

Kristen Harknett, associate professor in Social and Behavioral Sciences, delivered a presentation to the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Population on May 20. The presentation was titled "Medium and Long-Term Impacts of COVID-19 in the Service Sector."

UCSF Joins National Collaborative to Study COVID-19 Outcomes for LGBTQ People

School researchers have joined a new national collaborative to study the impacts of COVID-19 on members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer communities. The We Count Collaborative will be partnering with the PRIDE Study, of which Annesa Flentje, associate professor in Community Health Systems, is associate director. June Preceptor of the Month: David Gordon

David Gordon is the June Preceptor of the Month. Gordon is a nurse practitioner with the UCSF Advanced Lung Disease Service, where he cares for patients on the continuum from complex pulmonary diseases through lung transplantation. Interprofessional Humanistic Teaching Program Opens, Thanks to Faculty Member Kara Myers

Through the leadership of Kara Myers, volunteer clinical professor, and Calvin Chou of the School of Medicine, UCSF has been selected as a site for a new interprofessional humanistic teaching program, along with Emory, Indiana and Harvard universities.

The program is open to junior faculty interested in humanistic approaches to interprofessional care. The curriculum will focus on interprofessional care, education, leadership, professional identity formation, and diversity and inclusion.
