Environmental Perspectives on Healthy Households in Rural Peru

This a new research partnership formed in February, 2011 to collaborate with nursing faculty at the Universidad Católica Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo (USAT) in Chiclayo, Perú to investigate community-based environmental interventions to improve water sanitation and air pollution at the household-level.This builds upon a community-based participatory research project already implemented in rural communities in northern Peru. In this project, a nursing school (USAT), an NGO (Centro ECO), and local communities worked together to construct cooking stoves with chimneys, latrines and hand-washing stations. Centro ECO provided trainings on maintenance and use of these locally-produced appropriate technologies. UCSF and USAT faculty are planning to evaluate the sustainability of this community-based program and the integration of this model into future curricula in the USAT bachelor’s and master’s nursing program. This partnership will be discussed at a panel presentation at the Consortium of Universities for Global Health Conference.
