Renew Financial Aid for 2014-15 Now
If you plan to enroll for 2014-15 and want to apply for federal financial assistance, complete BOTH the FAFSA as well as the online UCSF Financial Aid Application, and the deadline for both forms will be March 3, 2014.  Students who miss the deadline may only be awarded the Federal Direct Loan and Graduate PLUS from our office.

MEPN students who will matriculate to the master’s program next year:
If you are under age 30 by December 31, 2014, you need to submit your parents’ information on the PROFILE by March 3 to be considered for “Full Funding”.  You can also choose to apply for “Basic Funding” and not submit the PROFILE or any parental information.  Please see our website for details regarding both funding options.

Nurse Midwifery Students Graduating in Summer 2014:
Students in the nurse midwifery program who will graduate in Summer 2014 should complete the 2014-15 FAFSA and online Financial Aid Application if they want financial aid for this last quarter, as Summer Quarter belongs to the 2014-15 academic year at UCSF.

Financial Aid Overview Information
Financial Aid Overview webpages for MEPN, master’s, doctoral, and post-master’s students are available in our website (http://finaid.ucsf.edu/newly-admitted-students/nursing-students).  These webpages cover important topics for each curriculum and frequently asked questions from students.

Spring Quarter Financial Aid Disbursement: If you have no registration hold and file your study list by mid-March, your spring quarter funds should be available by April 1.  If you had not signed up for direct deposit, a check for federal financial aid not applied toward your tuition should be mailed to you instead of direct deposit, so there may be a delay with postal delivery.  Deadline to pay Spring Quarter tuition is April 9, 2013.

Satisfactory Academic Requirements:

Please be aware that students must maintain satisfactory academic progress to receive financial aid.  This is a federal requirement.  Some of the basic requirements are:

  • All masters nursing students must take a minimum of 8 units each quarter for financial aid.
  • All doctoral nursing students who have not yet advanced to candidacy must take a minimum of 6 units each quarter for financial aid purposes.  Student who have advanced to candidacy are considered to be enrolled full-time regardless of the number of units they are taking.
  • Students who are enrolled for less than the above units are only eligible for a Federal Direct Loan and Graduate PLUS loans.  Students who take less than 4 units (or 3 units for doctoral students) are not eligible for federal financial aid.
  • All graduate academic/nursing students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0.

Filing Fee Status?  Please notify our office immediately if you are receiving federal financial aid and plan to be enrolled under Filing Fee Status in spring quarter.

Planning to Take a Leave of Absence?   If you do not plan to enroll in spring quarter, please contact our office immediately to cancel your financial aid.

Planning to Enroll this Summer?  Nursing students are not required to attend summer except entering MEPN, Postmaster’s students, and continuing Nurse Midwifery students.  If you elect to enroll for summer and need federal financial aid to cover summer tuition and cost of living, you can complete our online “2014-15 Summer Enrollment for Nursing Students” form which will be available in April.  You must confirm your enrollment with a faculty advisor before completing this form, as we need to know which summer session and how many units will you be enrolled, and whether you plan to be full-time for the remainder of the 2014-15 academic year.  More information will be available in the next issue of this newsletter.

Online Financial Aid Services:  The Student Financial Aid Office website (http://finaid.ucsf.edu) can be accessed any time to obtain check disbursement dates, information on the financial aid process at UCSF, download SFSO forms, etc.  Our office is located at Millberry Union, Room 201W. Office hours are Monday-Friday 8am to 5pm.  Our phone number is (415) 476-4181.

Artificial Nails

The UCSF Medical Center has put in place a policy regarding artificial nails for those health care workers involved in direct patient contact. “Artificial fingernail enhancements including artificial nails, tips, wraps, appliqués, acrylics, gels and any additional items applied to the nail surface will be prohibited for all health care workers with direct patient care contact.”

Artificial nail enhancements contribute to nail changes that can increase the risk of colonization and transmission of disease microorganisms to patients.

Nursing Student Council

The end of the quarter is near! The NSC would like to thank all those that participated in the Winter Social.  It was great meeting you all.

As the school year comes to an end, the NSC is happily recruiting for NEW OFFICERS!! Please contact the NSC or attend the next meeting 3/12/14 for more information. We will be posting open positions to our webpage and on flyers soon!
