Criteria Women Health Care Executives of Northern California (WHCE) is a professional association dedicated to the advancement of women in health-related careers. Each year WHCE offers the Lynn Adamson Memorial Scholarship to a graduate level student majoring in public health, health care, public policy, or the health sciences. The $4,000 scholarship and a one-year complimentary WHCE membership are awarded to a student who meets the eligibility and selection criteria. The scholarship winner will be recognized at WHCE's Annual Woman of the Year event to be held in San Francisco on May 2nd, 2013.

Criteria Any individual(s) with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research as the PD/PI is invited to work with his/her organization to develop an application for support. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups as well as individuals with disabilities are always encouraged to apply for NIH support. The PD/PI for a dissertation research grant must be enrolled in an accredited doctoral degree program in the behavioral, biomedical, or social sciences and must propose to conduct research in one of the areas specified in this funding opportunity announcement. The PD/PI must be a registered doctoral student in good standing.  The PD/PI doctoral student must be a citizen or a non-citizen national of the United States or an individual who has been lawfully admitted for permanent residence (i.e., in possession of currently valid Permanent Resident Card (USCIS Form I-551) at the time of application.  A doctoral student who receives support for dissertation research under a grant from NIDA may not hold concurrently another federally sponsored fellowship or similar Federal award, such as a National Research Service Award (NRSA) that provides a stipend or otherwise duplicates provisions of this grant program. A NIDA dissertation grant recipient may, however, accept concurrent educational remuneration from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and loans from Federal funds. Receipt of non-Federal funds during the grant period is also allowable if it is in accordance with the sponsoring institution's policy and does not detract from or prolong the approved doctoral training program.

Award Martin P. Levine Memorial Dissertation Fellowship
Amount $3,000 and $500 honorable mention

Criteria The award recognizes a graduate student in the final stages of dissertation research and writing, who is working on those topics to which Levine devoted his career: (1) the sociology of sexualities, (2) the sociology of homosexuality, and (3) HIV/AIDS research. It is designed to help students complete their dissertations, and as such the committee evaluates dissertation proposals rather than completed work.

Winter Quarter Financial Aid Disbursement:
If you have no registration hold and file your study list by early December, your winter quarter funds will be released late December so that it should reach your bank account before January.  If you did not sign up for direct deposit, a check will be mailed to you instead of direct deposit, so there may be a delay with postal delivery.
Winter Quarter Registration Hold:
Email notices were sent to students who have a registration hold placed by our office.  Please check your UCSF email account and resolve any hold immediately to avoid delay in funding.
Electronic Deposit:
If you received your fall quarter funding through check payment(s) and would like to sign up for direct deposit for future quarters so that funds can be deposited promptly into your checking or saving account, please do so right away at:
Satisfactory Academic Requirements:
Students must maintain satisfactory academic progress to receive financial aid. This is a federal requirement. Some of the basic requirements are:

  • All masters nursing students must take a minimum of 8 units each quarter for financial aid.
  • All doctoral nursing students who have not yet advanced to candidacy must take a minimum of 6 units each quarter for financial aid purposes. Student who have advanced to candidacy are considered to be enrolled full-time regardless of the number of units they are taking.
  • Students who are considered half-time are only eligible for a Federal Direct Loan and Graduate PLUS loans. Students who are considered less than half-time are not eligible for federal financial aid.
  • All graduate academic/nursing students must maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0.

2013-14 Financial Aid Application:
Our office website will be updated by early January with the 2013-14 application instructions, and we will send you an email when the information is available.  The deadline for all continuing students will be early March.  Students who miss the deadline may only be awarded Direct Loan and Graduate PLUS through our office.
The Student Financial Aid Office website ( can be accessed any time to obtain check disbursement dates, information on the financial aid process at UCSF, download SFSO forms, etc.  Our office is located at Millberry Union West Tower, Room 201W. A reminder about FRAGRANCES: 
The School of Nursing has more than a few students, faculty, and staff whose chemical sensitivities range from merely irritating to disabling.  There are many different symptoms from mild to severe and there is no real treatment except AVOIDANCE.  The faculty voted to make the School fragrance free several years ago in an attempt to reduce some of the triggers that make people uncomfortable or sick.  Please cooperate with this policy to help improve the health of our work and learning environment.
