Welcome to the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Nursing website. We hope it helps you discover how our century-long tradition of preparing the world’s finest advanced practice nurses and researchers offers exciting opportunities for advancing your career.
At a time when nursing education and practice is transforming before our eyes – with the Affordable Care Act and Institute of Medicine report on the Future of Nursing providing context and a blueprint – we are determined to prepare nurses who will continue to shape health care and promotion in this evolving environment.
Numerous impartial bodies testify to the value of our education. US News and World Report ranks many of our master’s level clinical education programs in the country’s top ten. The independent National Research Council has rated our Nursing PhD program best in the country and, in 2014, we again ranked top in receipt of NIH funds. Our faculty members are leaders in many settings, including the NIH and other U.S. Health and Human Services advisory panels. Many have received prestigious recognition, including induction in the National Academies of Sciences' Institute of Medicine and the American Academy of Nursing, as well as awards from institutions such as the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and American Cancer Society.
Yet what truly distinguishes us is our unwavering commitment to our students and their careers.
Our accredited master’s program offers a wide array of specialty training. Through coursework and superb preceptors, our master’s graduates leave fully prepared to assume roles as clinical nurse specialists or nurse practitioners in primary and acute care, across the lifespan.
Our PhD programs in Nursing and Sociology provide advanced training in theory and research methods that prepare the next generation of scholars to advance the profession. Their research in areas such as symptom management, technology interface, and HIV infection prevention and management continues to shape nursing practice and education worldwide.
Yet there is much more. We strongly encourage and support diversity in both our faculty and student body. We continue to increase the financial aid available to students. Interprofessional training is alive and well on one of the world’s finest health sciences campuses, which includes schools of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy as well as a state-of-the-art simulation lab, a Global Health Institute and the Clinical Translation Science Institute. Our nearly 500 volunteer faculty members practice and precept in dozens of clinical settings that include UCSF Medical Center and San Francisco General Hospital. We teach and conduct research in over a dozen countries, and attract nurses for graduate education from around the world, with a special emphasis on the Pacific Rim, the Western Pacific and Africa.
We also keep a keen eye on the future. We recently updated our master’s curriculum and are incorporating the latest in educational technology and research methods. We have a highly engaged Advisory Board and alumni who provide input into program review and development, as well as a faculty that is at the forefront of our profession and the broader clinical and scientific community. All of this is critical to keeping a vibrant tradition alive at a time of dramatic change.
