Welcome to the UCSF School of Nursing Office of Research. Research is at the very core of the UCSF School of Nursing mission. In tangible ways, our research advances nursing knowledge, guides improvements in health services and patient care, and contributes actively in the development of new and exciting educational course content.
Located on one of the foremost health science campuses in the country, the UCSF School of Nursing enjoys resources available at only a handful of research-intensive universities. These resources specifically include the UCSF Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) for interdisciplinary research training, with its 9 clinical research units located throughout San Francisco in both in-patient and out-patient facilities.
Over the last decade, the UCSF School of Nursing has been a leader in receiving research awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). NIH grants and other sources of funding make it possible for faculty, their graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows to sustain significant research programs that positively impact nursing practice, patient health care, and education. The UCSF School of Nursing consistently ranks among the top nursing schools in the United States for NIH monetary support and number of NIH research awards. In 2011, the School received 23 awards totaling $8.35 million.
Examples of recent research at UCSF School of Nursing are on our Research Highlights web page.
Innovative and ground breaking faculty research addresses areas related to the UCSF School of Nursing specialty programs and includes areas such as:
- Aging and Aging Health Policy
- Chronic Illness and Long-Term Care
- Clinical Practices and Professional Studies
- The Family in Health and Illness
- Emergency and Critical Care
- Health Promotion/Illness Prevention
- HIV/AIDS
- Pediatric Development and Health/Illness Care
- Symptom Management
- Women's Health Issues
- Health and Environment
Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows receive research mentorship from faculty with international reputations and contacts. For example, predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowships are available from the Research Center for Symptom Management (RCSM) and the HIV/AIDS Center. Trainees in these programs are encouraged to engage in ongoing faculty research, present their findings at professional and scientific meetings, and publish their work in peer-reviewed research journals.
